there are lots of .hack anime and they are all very good if you properly understand them
but to understand .Hack properly and see why its exellent, you have to watch the anime, play the games and read the manga

i've not gotten far into it, and what i know is kinda filled with holes because i kinda skipped around... i've watched part of Sign and played Infection and Mutation of the games, i know what's going on, but there are some things that aren't quite clicking yet...
P.S. i'm the anon that started this thread :P

Series was spread out way too thin across too many mediums. It required way to much effort to keep up with the many relevant side stories. Also the first series of games had the most boring combat & level-up system I've ever seen...

worst translations of any series I have ever watched, the plot was almost incomprehensible

i dunno, i liked the multi-medium storyline, although i must agree on the crap system the first set of games had.
as for the hard to comprehend storyline, i think it's easy enough to follow, provided you start in the right place... everything makes perfect sense if you listen close enough to the conversations.
Example: in Sign when Subaru is talking to the Silver Knight, she says that she fears for Orca and Balmung. Lo and behold, what happens in Infection? Skaith Data Drains Orca, knocking his player into the mysterious coma.
trelior>> totally agree. you gonna get into the new .Hack//Link?
the only reason the plot will seem incomprehensible or full of plot holes to others is because they're not read, watched or played all the mediums in the right order. the series was never spread out too thin, it was spread across many media for the purpose of a franchise that gets you to indulge into many mediums rather than just one, for example: anime

DivineWyrm>> yeah, but i need to get up to it in the story, i still have to finish sign, play through Outbreak and Quarantine, then watch Legend of the Twilight, and anything else i may be missing.
and i know why i have the plot line holes, and it's partially because cartoon network kinda screwed me the first time around and i couldn't watch all of Sign, then i started the games and was a tad confused, but now things are making sense

I now want to get back into the series. I remember getting really excited about the games, if only because an OVA was released along with each game in the series. Never finished the series that aired on CN, you know, back when they thought anime was a worthy venture.

i was mad that CN didn't run through the anime very many times, i didn't see much when it was aired, and i finally found the dvds and bought them to watch
i agree, anon, the games are cool... but a bit monotonous
