While this may not be related to the discussion, I still feel the need to ask; why would you want to use a word to describe yourself that the recipient may not understand?
Why would you want to describe yourself to those that knows you?

I think asking what the difference is is like asking the difference between otoko and man....they are both man, just different languages. Being called an otako just means you are a nerd....but personally, I think otako are cute ^_^

Anyone from the west that considers themselves and otaku is a weeaboo pretty much. I know what the word means to the Japanese. I know that Americans can't make up their mind what it means (because of the fact that they'e not fucking Japanese and don't fucking know since its not a part of their culture).
I'm a nerd in the sense that I'm smart, pretty educated about stuff, do my homework, play video games, know about 4chan, and watch anime.
But let's put it this way... last night I went out to a dance party, talked to a random girl, got her number, and now I'm going out with her again on Wednesday. And guess what!? She likes anime, too!
Much better than drawings of little girls, gotta say.
Stop doing this to yourselves. You can like anime and be a normal fucking person.

>>You can like anime and be a normal fucking person.
otakus are those who love anime and gaming to the point that it disrupts their normal life. they stay in ALL DAY only talking/reading doing stuff around anime and manga or games.
the name otaku is actually the most formal way to say "you" in japanese (anata would be less formal) and actually means "your house" - i think. it was used a sign of respect to the creators of some game or something,i can't really remember.
ANYWAY. an anime nerd just likes to watch anime, may have some posters, but goes out and does stuff. so what ifyou like anime and talk about it.
i love anime but i still have a life. i'm also a japanophile BUT no weeaboo.
otaku is also another name society gives those anime lovers - but keep in mind, they really only live there lives to anime (maybe gaming). everything they do is dictated by anime and those who love it. they have almost no social skills.

Otaku is not exactly a "derogatory" term though it can and has been used as such throughout its use, most recently and notably against Taro Aso by members of his political opposition.
Before the Miyazaki murders, otaku was a relatively safe, if underground, term. Those series of killings, coupled with the subsequent heightened awareness of the anime subculture, effectively created a stigma against the usage of "otaku". A stigma which continues today and is every so often resurrected by the media and anti-otaku authorities once something notable happens.
Among those who used the word correctly, it was never intended to carry an overtly negative connotation. And, in reality, its closest equivalent in English is a "hardcore geek", someone interested in anime, games, manga, doujinshi and all facets of the otaku subculture.
It has meant many things to many people, most notably Toshio Okasa, the famous Otaking. To him, otaku was defined by the needs to create works (anime/manga etc) as well as enjoy, memorize, and study them. Based on the consumeristic society we currently occupy, Okada commented that otaku have effectively died. He later clarified that comment by stating he just "doesn't understand" the otaku of today, who have very narrow interests and don't stray outside of groups; gundam otaku, game otaku etc. This development of niches prodded the creation of the term "maniac" or someone devoted to a single pursuit. It also served to soften the blow of "otaku"'s conventional connotation. Just like moe, there is no EXACT definition of what composes an otaku.
The Western adaptation of otaku is actually rather faithful to the original Japanese understanding, but the stark reality of the matter is that most Americans are simply not otaku, and might be more accurately described as "fans". However, the main difference between the two being the negative connotation is not as pronounced in America.

At times I'm amazed by Japan's awesomeness and wish I was born Japanese. But I don't have these dreams so I can sit on rear end and jack off to anime, read manga, listen to crappy J-rock music, and play video games all day. I actually like pre-1945 Japan.

Japanese schools are actually about knowledge. If American high schools had entrance exams I wouldn't have dropped out.

I'm otaku and a real ninja but I get laid all the time, so I think everyone who is otaku and needs sex should go to a con and find some slut in a bunny suit to hump.
