Death Note ends when Kira kills all those guys and becomes head of everything. The story ends there and Near and The Other One don't exist.
The series was awesome up until episode 19 or so, or up until they involved Misa. Misa is what ruined the series for me.

Oh yeah real ending of the anime is episode 26 (that why he had that monologue at the end how he's going to make the world a better place) other 12 episodes are the worst piece of invented garbage.If they were separate anime shows you would think that the second one (ep 26+) is a cheap rip off of the first one.

The key difference? Misaka becomes head priestess of really influential new religion. In those other versions she commits suicide or continues living like she used to before getting death note. Manga > everything else...
