Even though the N.H.K was a conspiracy, both Welcome to the NHK and real-life shows that the N.H.K does in fact exist and is a very profitable business procedure. Think of when the otaku anime airs in Japan - at least midnight when most "normal people are asleep and the subcultured and hikikomori are still awake. The businesses know this, so they are able to separate this group easily and can cater to those groups most effectively. Since the otaku and other are so separated from the regular society, the businesses exploit this and make them feel special in anyway possible in order to get those people to buy their product/service; this can be seen most easily by Akihabara. This appeals to the otaku and others, so they go to this place and other otaku hotspots and dive deeper into "normal" society stereotype of this subculture; as the otaku fall deeper into the stereotype, they become more repressed and begin to remove themselves from society, only leaving for experience the otaku life and do the necessaries of life.

However, since these otaku are still communicating with the "normal" society in there everyday routine, the businesses don't like this because the otaku are not focusing fully on the otaku business (they are still borderline as to whether or not to commit themselves fully to the otaku culture). The goal of the businesses now are to convert that borderline otaku to full otakuism (such as Yamazaki) or the hikikomori life (such as Sato) and this is done by the powers of the N.H.K. The N.H.K pushes the person to the limit by making them paranoid of regular society, alluring them with otaku products and silently convincing them that it's okay to make this step. This otaku finally can't take it anymore and becomes a full-otaku / hikikomori in which the otaku business has as a huge costumer for a very long time and most likely for the rest of the otaku's life. Thus, the N.H.K introduces the interest otaku life to the person and once that person is driven to that culture, the N.H.K's goal becomes to fully push the culture onto the person; in addition, the N.H.K will remove the person from "normal" society and would reinforce this by having "normal" society ridicule the otaku, pushing the person deeper into the otaku culture to the point where it's impossible to return.

So, welcome to the N.H.K.
