Magical Pokaan .ass subs in vlc

i got a Magical Pokaan fansub pack, with .ass subtitle files. im trying to play the files in vlc, but they are having a hard time playing, if at all. can anyone point me to better subs, or am i going to have to download someone elses rip all over again?
