anime for the distinguishing adult

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-23 1:24

Jolly right, mates. I'm on the hunt for some adult anime. When I say adult, I don't mean gratuitous nudity. In fact, I'd call that juvenile. No, what I am looking for is maturity in style and integrity in its telling. I'm beginning to think that regardless of their age, Japanese are perpetually juvenile, getting nosebleeds over boobshots at the right good age of 47. Hence the anime/manga industry has no desire to produce, nor clue about understatement, subtlety, etc. Am I wrong?

Ergo Proxy has been awesome up until now

Cartoons are for children. Anime is a cartoon. Therefore, anime is for children.
That's not to say there aren't cartoons for adults, they're just few and far between.

why not?  it's got maturity in style and integrity in it's telling, no gratuitous boobshots, and is full of understatement and subtlety.  it seems quite appropriate to what the OP is requesting.

Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the shell(movies+series) and Kino's Journey. If you like just action and adventure then there's lot of series notably Cowboy Bebop. Miyzaki's movies are also worth watching no matter what age are you.

Mahjong is somewhat for fags though.

Not to be a stickler, but any cartoon that's not for a child would probably just be called an animation. And oddly enough that's what anime translates into. Mind you most japanese just think of them as cartoons anyway so meh.

>>1 Japanese are perpetually juvenile
Do you have ANY idea how often that's be said throughout history?

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-23 21:40

Haruhi wasn't as good as the hype made it out to be.  While good, it's not "ZOMG, best anime of the year!"

Haruhi is a silly comedy show targeted at kids. If you can still roffle about that crap past the age of 14, you probably watch American sitcoms too.

>>16 Haruhi is good for more than humour value.

If you rofl at it you aren't very bright, but there are a few places where anyone would chuckle.

GunGrave (This will make any grown man shead tears)
Haibane Renmei (kinda light but soooo worth it)
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex (Togusa is drama-rific)
Speed Grapher (Insane story and a good dub)

Give up on anime and start reading seinen manga.

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-24 15:46

Manga is inferior because it's not animated and in many cases not even colored.

MIGHT AS WELL START READING REAL BOOKS THEN.

Most anime are poorly animated and even when coloured, the art looks like shit.

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-24 17:23

>>22

Also there is a lot of cool seinen manga that doesn't get animated because animu otaku are too busy fappin' to moe garbage.

Rly? It looks good enough to me.

Sad and true.

Certain art styles don't translate well into animu.

Look at Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. How the fuck are you supposed to animate that art style properly? They couldn't, so they used some gay non-Araki style.

But that's what all adult crap that isn't porn and killing is about.

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-26 17:54

how about Nana, Honey & Clover, I think they are pretty mature although some jokes are stupid but well...

manga are no inferior to anime which are often flooded with colored but disfigured drawings. and otaku's do read a lot of light novels nowadays
