I just recently finished watching this anime, first to the last episodes, and I wanted to get others opinions about it, personally I thought that it was a beautiful anime, with great art and a deep enriching story, the last episode brought me to tears.
You win. Haibane Renmei is an absolutely gorgeous show with a subdued, but rich, emotional undercurrent. Not many people have seen it, so I'm glad that you had the opportunity. :)
I'm of the opinion that Haibane Renmei must be watched while it's light outside, much as Boogiepop Phantom must be watched while it's dark outside.

I got to about episode 4 when I became bored out of my fucking mind. I guess you have to be pumped full of stimulants to enjoy that type of shit, because it certainly didn't make me "feel good" it made me feel bored. The only thing I enjoyed about it was how the owner of that machinery plant treated the haibane with glasses like a dog, and I liked how the crows shit everywhere.
I'm a huge Yoshitoshi fan, perhaps I bailed out too soon. I also gave up on Boogiepop at about episode 3, Texhnolyze at episode 18. I love the art in all of them shamelessly, but the plots are just too fucking slow.
To think these followed Lain- such a brilliant crafted, well-polished work of art, is pretty sad.
Anyway, go back to HR and skip to episode 6. This is the advice I give to everyone who's getting tired of the slow start (since ABe isn't a very experienced script writer and apparently started writing without thinking very far heard) and it usually works. The main plot arc starts then.
