I have a question to all hardcore anime watchers here.
I've watched about 5-7 full anime series ever because everytime I start watching one I get bored after 1 or 2 eps. Latest one I watched was Ichigo Mashimaro and I only watched half of it because I couldn't find subs for episode 7-12. I found it to be pretty entertaining and "easy" to watch. Other series I've watched are Hellsing, GTO, Azumanga Daioh and R.O.D , all of them were decent atleast and kept me hooked enough to watch them. So hit me with your recommendations of anime series that won't bore me to hell and make me stop watching after the first episode.

Actually, the "hook" happens around the 1/2 and 3/4 mark of a series. Some series are almost pointless until that time.

That's exactly the shit I don't want to watch. There must be atleast a few series that aren't like that?!

Well in my opinion, most random series with no intentional plot are pretty addictive. Just watching for the crazy character designs. My recommendation all three seasons of 'jungle wa hale nochi guu' and all four seasons of 'galaxy angels'. Aside from random ones, the ones I found addictive are fullmetal alchemist, evangelion and samruai champloo

I'd have to say Fullmetal(Full Metal?) Alchemist. The first episode is easily the worst and even then, it's not that bad. It seems like every single episode ends on a cliffhanger. Hell, even the most minor details from any episode will come back a few episodes later and punch you in the dick with plot twists.
I've heard people say that a few humorous moments totally break the mood of an otherwise very serious situation, but to hell with that. I laugh like a fucking madman for 10 seconds then go right back to sitting on the edge of my seat.

the ones that tend to hook me most early on are high-action series (which often degrade into 'super fighter with more power than God must defeat other super fighter with more power than God: time to train!' a la Dragon Ball.) if you're just looking for a good watch without worrying about anything like an original plot or quality drama, you should be fine.
in this case, Bleach and Naruto would be good candidates. if you replace 'fighter' with 'baker', Yakitate Japan would also apply.

FLCL. A Short, well animated, and highly entertaining Anime. It kept me hooked because so much was happening so fast, most of it I couldn't even understand. I'm with you 100% long Animes bore me pretty easilly unless it's exellently made.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I'll check them all out as my time allows.
I just finished watching FLCL and it was indeed fun and entertaining. A bit too random at times but that didn't detract much from it. Very action-packed, you hardly had any time to get bored. As soon as you thought one of those 10 minute moments with just garbage, as often seen in other animes, would come, it just jumped right into the action again. I guess it's a tradeoff you have to make. Randomness vs drawn out boring scenes. Also, I loved Mamimi's voice, a shame the voice actor hasn't done more anime work.
A question to everyone who watched FLCL. Just after watching the last episode I was struck by strong feelings of sadness, which soon passed. Am I a huge fucking faggot or what is going on?
The show is a metaphor about a male going through puberty and the beginning of his adolescence. Rewatch it and pick out all the references.

If you're an eighties child (ie. twenties now) and have fond memories of watching cartoon and anime, give the old Kimagure Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku, old Gundams, Patlabor, Saint Seiya, etc series a try.
Nothing like old cheesy, feel good anime to kick up an anime marathon.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, Suzuka, Giant Robo, Full Metal Panic to name a few.

You know, the series you named are ones which pretty much everyone agrees are 'really good'. I guess you're best off sticking to short OVAs, and just feeling out for what you like.
The following are good and short.
Perfect Blue - Movie, horror / psychological thriller, this is dark anime canon
Elf Princess Rane - Very creative comedy. I think it was meant to be a full OVA, but they had to cut it after 2 episodes due to lack of revenue.
Ah! My Goddess! - 5 Episode OVA, puppy love romance between a boy and a Goddess. There is also a movie (which I have not seen, but have heard good things about), and a television series (it was inferior).
Ebichu - TV series of shorts, in the style of Azumanga Daioh. Basically this is low-budget shock humor. There's no point in watching the whole thing, IMO, but pretty much any given episode is good for a (dirty) laugh.
All in all, just stick with movies and OAVs. They tend to be higher quality in terms of production value, and they can't spend 10 episodes before getting to the point.

I'd avoid those reccomendations. Most of those are very long animes that have slow and/or bad story pacing. Tri-Gun's the exception.

It depends on what genre you like most, there are so many.
For Shoujo:
Utena- So weird you gotta keep watching
Fruits Basket- Emotional roller coaster, cute, funny
Card Captor Sakura- Admit it, it's too cute
Kare Kano: Funny, drama, Gainax
For Shounen:
Bleach: Gets better as it goes
FMA: Mentioned many times already for good reason
Cowboy Bebop: Episodic, always interesting
Initial D: Cliffhangers, decent story
Then there's weird ones:
Abenobashi- WTF
FLCL- Plain kewl
Then there's Escaflowne..shoujo/shonen? Classic either way!

I liked Blue Seed because it's the first anime series I closely watched (it had the most episodes for rent at Blockbuster), but I can honestly see a lot of people thinking it's a tad silly or generic. I loved Samurai Champloo. I could never get into the Tenchi series, but I really liked the Tenchi movie (Tenchi Muyo in Love!). And of course Evangelion was pretty good.

Escaflowne pulled me in, but only after i got past the first episode.
Rah Xephon is another good one that will keep you going, especially if you've seen EVA already and notice all the similar-yet-different things about it.

Excel Saga. A classic that must not be missed.

in my experience, eva has too slow of a pace to really bring you in, other series mentioned in the thread are better at that.
Not that eva isn't a good show, it just requires a bit more patience. Another example would be .hack//SIGN.

Im happy to see Escaflowne being mentioned. It was such an underrated series to a point. The one thing that had me hooked with Escaflowne is the richness of the series. The music as well just rocked. Its one of those series that both girls and boys would love.
Too bad FOX has to be butcher the damn thing when it made its American debut.

Macross Plus is another anime series that just keeps me hooked. I could watch it over and over again and still have that same feeling from the first time.
Yep, escaflowne was pretty sweet with a good sense of humor. And Yoko Kanno's music, as always, brought the show to a new level of enjoyability. I tried to watch the American dub for a few episodes, but had to stop when their cuts chopped music off in the middle of a measure. It was painful to watch.

I definitely have to recommend Yakitate!! Japan, it's completely crazy and serious at the same time. The 1sr episode covers so much that everyone I know that has started it gets hooked right then. I did!
You all should check out Turn A Gundam.
It's easily the best out of the six Gundam series I've seen.

I like dai no daibouken anime but it was cancelled too soon (i think it was just 25 or something of episodes) but in the manga was finished till the end. also i like shaman king, St Seiya, Cptn Tsubasa, Moero top striker, Goal Field Hunter, Hungry Heart, RuroKen, HagaRen and some others.
They made some OAVs... not sure why they didn't resolve the series with any.
