Yeah, some of their stuff is great, some of it is CRAP (INITIAL D >:o), and a lot of it meh.
I wish they'd stop trying to sell shitty amerimanga and manwha :s

It seems like they try too hard to cram in extra humor, or they gloss over dialogue to make lines more jokey, which leads to out-of-character situations.
If you have no experience with the original version, though, I guess that wouldn't bother you as much. You still might be able to tell when they're forcing in jokes, though. It can be way too obvious.
It probably depends on the editor a series gets, though.

Fucking seconded. Rising stars my butt. Although I wish there was a larger domestic doujin community, where people could sharpen their chops before signing deals to make generic, awkwardly written comics. Something that would generate real "rising stars" rather than a collection of winners of some corporate artist cattle call.

Tokyopop's Kare Kano & Lament of the Lamb are pretty decent, dunno about the rest of the new ones. I think their reputation is a lot worse than they deserve. They used to suck monkey balls, but not anymore.
