Genshiken by Del Ray

I just picked up a copy today and when I started reading it at home I notice a problem with it.  They didn't put enough space in the margins in the center of the book and now I have to try and stretch and pull to read some of the text.  Anyone else have this problem?  Did I get one from a bad printing batch or is the company just shit?

Comics in general, manga included, tend to have this issue.

Is the translation any good? Genshiken strikes me as something that would be a bastard to localise.

I guess it's pretty good.  I don't know Japanese so I can't compare with the japanese version.  I only thing I didn't like is the center margins and the translation notes.  They have some translation notes in the back but nothing informing you like a superscript number saying there is more information.  The translation notes refers back to the page it's on.  So you have to read the notes first and then read the story?  That doesn't make any sense.  I skimmed through the FMA manga and I would have liked 1/4 to 1/2 an inch more space between the pages but at least you don't have to crack the binding to read all the text.

not enough space in the center margins is why i like scans.

it is extra information. if you notice a joke or reference that doesn't make sense, then most likely it's back in the notes. if you don't know notice, what's the big deal?

if you're reading genshiken it's assumed that you have encyclopedic knowledge of all anime, manga, and video games to begin with
anyway, compared with the fansub, which was almost panel for panel with the manga, del ray seems to be doing quite a good job, although I wonder why some times show names and characters are edited to close parodies and sometimes just left the same ("Raputa??")... I guess they're more afraid of some companies than others

Some people have been pretty harsh with Del Rey's translation over @ 4-ch:

The S-Cap thing is particularly interesting: the author changes the name but directly copy the lifebar graphic from the game, so as to let people know exactly what he's talking about.

Those are issues, but I wouldn't call it pretty harsh. Minor, yeah.

Don't change these.
