I've never seen boxed sets of manga, like anime DVDs. I think it would be easier for some to collect entire sets without having to track down each volume, or not know what the final volume is in the series. Also, spinoffs and specials might be overlooked.

I've never seen anything like it, really. Not even in Japan.
However, at used shops like Book Off (♥), kbooks and mandarake (♥♥) they'll take complete collections of series and wrap 'em in shrink wrap.
I know this doesn't help you, but it's still something to note.

Books hardly ever come in box sets.
(Not that that's a good thing)

It's rare, but it does happen.
As an example, there are boxes for the Chobits, Wolf's Rain and Inuyasha mangas.

Yeah, lately Tokyopop and Viz have been doing this. I just picked up the Peach Girl 1-4 set recently. I quite like the idea, since I usually read one book too quickly. And the price is the same you'd end up paying for all the books seperately anyways.
The deal was made even sweeter though, since they reprinted the whole thing without flipping it, left in the extra end chapter from the editor, kept the japanese sfx in, and changed the godawful all-caps font they used in the first editions of the book. The Rayearth manga also got a similar treatment awhile ago, I think it was Tokyopop's first manga box set. Anyways, I'll definitely be buying the future sets.

I've seen 'boxsets' in Japan, but only of older series such as Bastard!! However, when I say 'boxset', I just mean all the volumes from one series being sold togther.
More than likely the reason there aren't boxsets, like DVD's, is due to the sheer length of certain manga's. For certain manga, selling the collected volumes maybe hard, so its a financial gamble that more than likely won't pay off. In Japan they usually just make better quality copies of establised manga ie in hardback (if theyre EXTREMELY successful), if there is a desire for for it.

^^. We have two boxsets in Germany. One is for Card Captor Sakura and one is for Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. They're basically just nice cardboard wrappers with artwork on them. We do get one postcard a piece with every new Chobits tankubon and we got a clow card with each of the twelve Sakura tankubons *huggles German manga publishers*

There are (Japanese) manga sets sold in preowned book store and stuff. But not boxed sets.
I remember reading that you can get European box (without the manga) and slip in Japanese manga right in them with no problem. I guess they don't resize there, unlike US publishers do... Now you even get an ugly TokyoPop logo on the spine too... sheesh.

That's pretty much what I've seen as well.
