Sure the art may not have been the best, it was aimed at a younger audience, and it was drawn by Akira Toriyama (meaning his character designs are nothing new).
But I think Dragon Quest is extremely cool. The first series, Abel Yuusha, had only 13 episodes dubbed in the US, and was loosely based off Dragon Quest III. The second series, Dai No Daibouken, was an extremely popular manga and anime in Japan. I thought it did an excellent job of portraying RPG characters in interesting ways, with characters you could care about more than a typical throwaway fantasy anime. Just like in DBZ, it did a great job of building up suspense and tension throughout the story, though it was eventually cancelled (some OAVs were made, not sure if a conclusion story was ever made).
There was also a movie, Dragon Quest: Emblem of Roto, though I haven't watched it. There are even more manga series, including Maboroshi no Daichi, The Heaven Saga, and Warriors of Eden.
I just wish it was brought over here, it would do well with a lot of younger viewers and Toriyama fans.
