Most average anime

Name: JDigital 2004-12-24 20:32

There's a "favorite anime" thread and a "worst anime" thread. What's the most average anime? The most "Ehh, it was okay I guess" show that you'd maybe watch if it was on TV, but wouldn't really buy the DVD?

My vote is for Konomini. The first episode was hella awesome, and the ending was cool. The series idea was fantastic and inspirational. The series could have been awesome if episodes 2-12 (of a thirteen episode series) weren't nothing but character development and fanservice interspersed with one monster fight.

What's your most "meh" anime?

Name: Mr VacBob !JqK7T7zan. 2004-12-24 21:03

King of Bandits Jing

It's fun to watch just to look at it, but Jing solves every problem in seconds. It's the least suspenseful thing I've ever seen.

Name: Chaznable 2004-12-24 22:52

All the Ghost in the Shell stuff (first movie, second movie, and the TV series). I just found it so "meh".

Name: l3reakManX 2004-12-24 23:53

Have to agree with Konomini. I thought of that as soon as I saw your thread, and was quite amused to see it as your choice too.

Maybe if they would have really added a lot more meat into the show and fleshed it out to 2 seasons it could have been good, but as is, it's bottom of the barrel Gainax.

Name: Benly 2004-12-25 3:29

Prince of Tennis. It is the most remarkably bland and uninteresting sports anime I've ever seen. I have no idea where it gets its fanbase.

Name: QLx 2004-12-25 6:23

I'd have to say "Uninhabited Planet Survive".

There's the standard characters: Plucky Girl Surviving Adversity, Intelligent but socially useless boy, Stuck Up Pompus Git, Hardarse Girl with Deep Inner Pain, Strong Silent Guy, Cool Goodlooking Emotionless Boy, and Cute Fuzzy Amusing Robot/Animal.

There's no real suspense, no fantastic animation, the storyline is average and the characters just boring and predictable. I watched what I had, but didn't get the whole series... I just didn't care enough what happened to the cast.

Narue no Sekai (Narue's World, World of Narue, whatever they're calling it) is my benchmark for "most average anime". While I enjoyed watching it, I have precisely zero motivation to watch it again or recommend it, yet I would also have precisely zero objection to someone else putting it on or recommending it. It's never too serious or too fanciful, always riding straight in the middle. It's never all that funny, but never without humor. It's never all that tense, yet it's never really boring. I challenge everyone to watch this show and actually have a strong opinion about it; I don't think it can be done.

mujin wakusei survive isnt supposed to be some amazing groundbreaking show

standard ~50ep leisurely-paced fun little show aired in the mid-p.m. timeslot on nhk, targetted at the afterschool demographic

what do you want from shows of this sort... elfen lied guro tactics, or contrived pseudo-psychological plotlines...
why are you so let down, what were you expecting?

The most average anime ever is Tokyo Underground. It's a story about ELEMENTAL FIGHTERS, with a hero with a sword, a sassy girl, and a quiet one fighting against an evil organization who is not really evil.

Name: Edible Corpse 2004-12-25 12:14

hmm for me it was kiddy grade. i had some high hope when the story seemed to get intresting at episode 8, but it was pretty much a chore just to finish the whole thing

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-25 12:15

kiddy grade had fun moments, it was an enjoyable somewhat shallow show

gauge things by their purpose, kiddygrade wasnt supposed to "CHANGE YOUR LIFE"

Anything at Blockbuster. Oh, it'll expand your horizons. If you want to study the truly average. Everything in the anime section is what I call "aimless anime," typically an OAV that lasts 40 minutes and accomplishes little to nothing. And that's it. You never hear of it again. What's worse is that some companies only have the rights to these, because they're cheap, and keep trying to sell them (Ayane's High Kick, for example).

Ayane's High Kick: generic boxing story
Demon Century Suikoden: Typical fighting game anime with lots of pointless characters. Only it's not actually based on a fighting game.
Samurai Shodown/Spirits: You'd expect a cool plot with all the interesting character designs, but no.
Toshinden: Can't be taken seriously. Especially when Duke rides in on a horse.
Ruin Explorers: Man, I thought this would be halfway decent by its cover. But it's just... half.
Silent Service: Epic, high budget, thought provoking submarine movie. And it's completely ridiculous tripe.
Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals: Not awful, but forgetable.
Blood the Last Vampire: Too short, some ugly characters. More of a testing ground for computer animation techniques.
Miyukichan in Wonderland: Testing ground for character designs, nothing more.
Legend of Lemnear: Plot is typical fantasy, could have used more wit.
Demon Beast Invasion: Heh.
Ninja Resurrection: Techno Japan was at least a cool concept. But there's no conclusion. So it feels incomplete. Because it is.

Best of the average:

Kimera: Eh, it's ok
Kobuto: Er, ok. Maybe.
Demon City Shinjuku: Eh, it's alright
Lily C.A.T.: Er, it's ok. For an average Alien/The Thing knockoff.
A Wind Named Amnesia: I keep forgetting whether this was any good or not. Hmm..
Venus Wars: Ok.
Battle Angel Alita/Gunnm: Alright.
Armitage III: Ok, I guess.
Biohunter: Pretty cool. But short.
Plastic Little: Yeah. Best movie ever made as far as I'm concerned.
Agent Aika: Best anime ever made. Truly award winning stuff.

IMO the most AVERAGE anime i can think of is Sailor Moon, i dunno who else agree, but everyone knows Sailor Moon, let it be the series, movies, or hentai :p

Yeah, I remember Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. I also remember being so bored watching it that my friends and I just started cracking bad jokes thoughout the whole thing. It was entertaining for a while, though.
I also watched Dirty Pair Flash and Burn Up W, and even though they were good for a while, they didn't really blow my mind or make me want to throw out the dvd's.

burunup tvshow ep that had the eva spoof was very funny

they aired the same year.. so its allowed

I'll definately agree with #12 on Armatage III and Blood. To add to that list, I'd also go with

Tenchi Universe
Dual
El Hazard TV (but the OVA was good)
Pretty Sammy (there were some funny parts to it, but there plenty of 'bleh' parts to it as well).

Fushigi Yuugi & Escaflowne

Both defintly had their moments, thou I ended up sleeping through some of the storyline, but managed to catch up as the both series went on.

>>12 Miyukichan in Wonderland was hideous! Worst softcore Hentai I've EVER seen!

Name: JDigital 2004-12-26 14:00

Another average anime was Final Fantasy: Unlimited. A shame, because it wasn't all bad, and it had potential, much like Konomini.

The first episode I saw was #5, which looked rather spiffy - a mysterious dark-cloaked figure (Kuroki Kaze) wonders why some artifact on his arm fails him, and he is seemingly killed by a white-outfitted swordsman (Shiroi Kumo), only to for the same artifact to activate at the end of the episode, allowing him to successfully beat his enemy with a rather cool effect.

The problem is that that episode is about as good as it gets, and much of the rest of the series is samey, repetetive and somewhat uninteresting. The characters, although not universally uninteresting (Cid is fantastic, Kaze is at least nominall interesting), don't develop beyond one of the kids getting a chocobo and the other getting a new outfit occasionally. Nothing much happens different except what ill-conceived monster they fight. The plot is as lacking as the plot of my D&D games! Even Kaze's "Demon Gun" effect gets boring after a while. It feels like they took a 13-episode series, tried to stretch it out to a 52-episode series, wondered why it was cancelled after 25 episodes and had to fit all the cool stuff into the final episode.

Name: Blah 2004-12-26 14:00

It was more of a character design demo, like Daicon IV. Only it was released like an actual movie.

Name: 2004-12-26 16:43 (capped)

Disregard my previous post, since I just watched Brave of the Sun Fighbird. The animation is pretty much Scooby Doo quality, the enemies are DBZ cels painted different colors, and all of the super robot elements (launching, combining, announcing attacks) are done with a lack of FIGHTING SPIRIT and are rather boring.

Name: 2004-12-26 17:22 (capped)

Fyvard does not belong in a worst anime thread man. It may not be GaoGaiGar, but there is stuff out there that makes Fyvard look like HR by comparison.

Name: 2004-12-26 17:23 (capped)

Oh wait, this is the most average thread. Beaten by INTERNET.

People only watch Miyukichan beacause its not just softcore porn, its CLAMP softcore porn.

Exactly.  Konomini looked like it would be awesome but in the end it became exactly like mahoromatic, except with SLIGHTLY different characters and monsters instead of androids.

I remember dreaming of Initial D for a long time. I finally saw some of it, and I wanted to barf.
But then I can't remember any driving anime that was interesting for some time.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-18 22:11

Maybe the manga of Initial D is good (haven't read), but the CG in it is just so JARRING & BAD.  And I LIKE sports anime.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-19 9:16

Tokyo Underground was pretty much avarage, but the ending seemed rushed (maybe that's because there are over 2 volumes of the manga left after ep 24?). IT'S ALL HAPPY FOR NO REASON!!

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-21 22:04

Series-wise it's got to be Tenchi Muyo.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-24 9:01 (sage)

I watched the first ten minutes of the first episode of initial D twice. Thats how completely average and forgetable it was.

Average or below-average?

I like *some* anime but a lot of it just leaves me cold.  I liked Evangelion, but I couldn't watch Betterman.  I loved Cowboy Bebop, but I couldn't tolerate Pokemon.  I enjoyed Lupin III, I hated Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.  I liked Vampire Princess Muyo, I couldn't stand Sailor Moon.  I'm enjoying Gundam Wing so far but I despise Dragonball Z.
