communism has a maximum size for which it can work. if it gets bigger, the only way for the society to remain communist-like is to become a communist-like socialist dictatorship.

I don't think that size is really a factor. Communism would only work if every member is voluntarily communist and freely gives of themselves to the whole before providing for themselves. It's that whole forcing your subjects to conform to communist ideals that really doesn't work with people.
