I've been at the 2.5 year mark in a relationship myself... I noticed that my boyfriend did not refer to me as his "girlfriend" in public, and I obsessed and worried and wondered if he was ashamed of me, or not as serious about me as I was about him. Admittedly, he didn't really refer to me as anything, and that's somewhat different from what I would have considered "downgrading" me to just a friend. But here's the important part: I talked to him about it. I told him that it upset me, but I also asked him for an honest answer about why he was doing it. You know what he said? "I don't feel comfortable with the word "girlfriend" because I see you as a woman and not as a girl." I'd still rather just be his girlfriend, but at least I understand it wasn't anything against me.
