What anime character is good for a newbie?

Hi. What anime character would be good for someone who doesn't know anime and you want to get into it? thx.

If you don't mind me referring to entire shows instead of just characters I'd like to suggest Trigun like the one before me, and also Cowboy Bebop, Naruto and Rurouni Kenshin.
