Film Piracy

Name: its not a victim less crime 2012-11-18 14:11

Our film is heavily downloaded on torrent sites, despite its catastrophic distribution in the US Seven years ago.

It still gets more downloads than The Thing "remake" and many other high profile horror films, more even than the Prometheus, but pretty much all of it has been through these FREE file-sharing sites.

So in my experience and through talking to other film makers, you're kind of, well, torn by all this, Distributors' "creative accounting" means an unknown writer or director making independent films never sees any back end profits anyway.

And in truth, once the film is made you just want as many people as possible to see it. If it were up to me, the cinema would be $5 to get in, but deep down you just want EVERYONE to see your film... but then... the blunt reality is, would YOU in invest money in any product that is going to be given away for free within an hour of it hitting the shelves?..

Right, so now it just doesn't make sense to invest in a film anymore... but then... there's another upside to free file sharing.

Your 'product' has now been exposed to maybe millions more people than it would have been, if the only way to see it was to pay.

But sales have now stopped, people are not paying for the downloads or DVDs, and infact kill any sequel that might have been!

The profit obtained should be through complimentary merchandising to break even. If you were dumb enough to sell a movie and have no other products to compliment said movie, you are begging to be robbed blind. Theaters make their popcorn expensive for a reason: to break even for the cost of holding that film.

Are you for real moron, so whats he going to do fill his DVDS full of popcorn and coke!!! get real!

only 5% of all films made get shown in movie theaters, and go on inform us of what other products he can compliment his business with.

Wanna know what the real crime is? That we ever allowed society to get to the point where someone can essentially be a liar for a living and make more than someone who saves lifes every day.

The entertainment industry is full of greed shit cocks. Oh boohoo I make movies for a living and contribute heavily to this fucked up inbalance, boo hoo. People bust their ass doing things that actually benefit us and you make movies. Great job.

When you distribute a monetized item (game ROMs, music, movies, etc.) "freely" over the Internet, for other people to download, yes that is essentially stealing. You can call it whatever you want, but the end result is the same.

The end result is not the same. You are essentially sharing the product with other people, not theft is committed and no money is taken from anyone. Sure, the people associated with the product don't make money off of file sharing but they don't lose money either, they just stay the same.

On a side not, art should not be bought or charged for. Art should be freely distributed just like ideas because that's what they are, or at least what they should be. Movies, music, and video games are an art form that should be made to invoke intellectual thought and feelings in a person. They shouldn't be made so James Cameron can sit on his ass in an extraordinarily expensive home because he made some shitfest for a quick buck. Any director, actor, or musician worth caring about will tell you that piracy is fine by them because they make money other ways and people are exposed to their art the way they should be.

Art isn't about money, it's about art.

What about distribution and marketing? Those people had to use a energy source like gasoline to get the word out, which in turn endangered the lives of American soldiers who are forced to fight a war over limited resources such as oil.

Your illegally copied, unaltered data is tainted with blood.
Why couldn't you just make a legal parody like everyone else?
Parody laws give you complete immunity and no one gets hurt.

The biggest problem you have with that argument is the assumption that the company somehow 'loses' something on a pirated copy. You don't even know if the people who pirate would ever be willing to spend money on your product.

In other words, if you got everything you would have otherwise, how are you a victim?
