Why get a smartphone that's outdated before you're out the door? And what is the future of cell phones?

Outdated according to who? The people trying to sell you a phone?

None of the smartphones offer any new features over the previous generations. Just incremental hardware improvements.

Hell none of the smartphones offer any real new features besides touch screens over old "dumb phones". My old dumb phone did everything a new smart phone can do, from bluetooth sync and voice commands to aGPS navigation and thousands of user made apps available at my every whim.

Now the aim of the manufacturers is to sell appearance, a smartphone is a sexy object.

Why use a phone at all? I don't have anyone to call, and if I need to communicate with someone, smoke signals work just fine.
