Posted this on /g/ and everyone got butthurt, so here's my thread:
What else do I need to protect my computer? Is there anything I'm missing?
>anti-virus program
>firewall
>Anti-Malware
>Anti-Spyware
>CCleaner
>Web of Trust
>OpenDNS to block porn
>never watch porn
Will there be any chance of viruses or anything else if I use all this? I plan on downloading movies, music, and e-books with a torrent program on my new laptop and was wondering if there's still a chance I can become infected.
Th-thanks /g/.

It's fairly difficult to completely protect your system from viruses. Using common sense is the best protection from viruses.

If you use torrent to dl movies and music, you will be dl'ing malware.
If you want to remain "safe" build a VM on your computer and use the VM to dl the torrent, and play the movie/music files.
Optionally, you could use a good Sandbox such as Sandboxie.com. Free is good, but if you want to use it to its fullest, get the full version. it is very easy to use and setup.
If you plan on using the Sandbox method, at the very least, you will need to sandbox:
- Browser
- Torrent app
- Flashplayer (or whatever you will be using to view/play the files dl'd
The VM isn't gonna add any safety unless the disk it resides in is encrypted. A VM actually makes it easier to move your evidence into a VM farm in their office.
As long as you're running windows you might end up with something. Common sens 2012 and a good ad blocker will prevent you from getting something too hard to get rid of.
>>anti-virus program
>>Anti-Malware
>>Anti-Spyware
Useless.
>>firewall
If it's not running on your machine you're good. Put one on your box or router.

anti-virus program
Nice if you want to burn more CPU cycles searching for viruses than for normal use.
firewall
Put yourself behind a router, do not allow anyone else you don't trust on the same side.
Anti-Malware
Don't install crapware bundled with "free" apps.
Anti-Spyware
Do not surf fishy places.
CCleaner
Prevent before cleaning.
Web of Trust
Do you really trust them?
OpenDNS to block porn
Why would you do that? Are yoy Pope Ratzinger?
never watch porn
Then why you are on Internet?

>to set blacklists against virus sites that you may accidentally get redirected to while browsing like "0.0.0.0 defender-f67vf.in" in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
>to use HitMan Pro whenever your only antivirus program finds a virus but can't remove it

Browser security is extremely important. Preventative security is better than after-the-fact stuff.
There's a list of good security-related Firefox add-ons here: http://weeabootech.com/?p=3317
And here's an article about hosts files: http://weeabootech.com/?p=3760
