Ad hoc network

Hey, anons, what's up?
I'd like to inquire you all about some doubts i have about networking, wireless network to be more specific.
I'd like to create a wireless ad hoc network. That's because actually i don't have a wifi router here and i want to keep it as simple as possible.
So I have 2 questions: does it work for real? I mean, did someone already try to set up a ad hoc network sucessfully?
And can it be used to share internet between 2 pcs one close to another?

Yes. My friend and I use an ad hoc network to chat while we donate plasma.
