Must delete viruses

My computer has been running extremely slow recently. My first course of action was to attempt to run a scan on my computer with mcaffee security center (my current anti-virus program). It showed me that there was nothing wrong but when I did a scan using a norton trial it showed that I had a trojan and some other malware on my computer. Of course being a trial means it doesn't delete the files it detects... Now comes my problem I have no clue how to find the malware without the help of these programs (not very good with computers). Can anybody suggest a good, free program that could help me locate and delete the viruses? I'd prefer not to pay for an entirely new program.
