Noise eliminating/cancelling

/tech/, what are some of the ways that you cancel out sound/hearing?  I don't mean for audio-listening purposes, but just for not being able to hear.  I am a person who loses focus very easily when reading, and this affects my studying very negatively.  I have a pair of noise-canceling headphones, but can still hear most normal sounds coming from upstairs when using them.  Any suggestions?
