My guess is that Opera decided to release the wraps off Unite early because in some very vague web-2.0-ish way, the two apps are competitors.
Opera wants to open the web up so that everyone can have their own server and send info and files at a snail's pace between ADSL connections. (Woo?)
Google on the other hand wants you to join their Wave. Of course, you can implement your own Wave Server, but most people will probably just sign up with their Google account.
