I wasn't a believer until I saw the 1.33 hour long video from the Google Developer Conference.
What can I say? This is amazing stuff. Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
For me, I can think of a few purposes
* At work, this is an Outlook killer. No more infinite CCs on subjects. No more documents being e-mailed back and forth. No more network file shares. Instead, everything is interactive, live, and accessible. zOMG.
* At home, this kills IM/networking sites/wikis/e-mail. It kills them dead. Instead of all this, I open up my Wave Client and I see it all in one go.
The only people that I can see who will actively try to kill Google Wave are websites. This thing is a huge customization/content aggregator making website visits pointless.
I want this so bad. I want it now. And when the story first broke on Slashdot, I ridiculed it as another Web 2.0 pie-in-the-sky bullshit. But it isn't.
This thing involved uncountable man hours of coding time. And it will be given away for nothing by Google. My head spins. I never thought I'd see the day when something like this came out.

Google always makes great products. What I'm hoping is that this will be decentralized, like other websites could provide the same service, that way my friends who use yahoo, or hotmail could use this with me also.

Just saw that google said they were open sourcing it. This could be BIG. I understand why they make some of their products open source: adnroid sped up cell phone develpment and advancments so that searches (googles primarily) would be done more often. But stuff like this? Looking at them side by side with microsoft is... interesting.

Yeah #2&3, the protocol is open and documented so you could either create your own Wave server from scratch or from using Google's code.
Google is calling communication between Wave servers "federation". This is the sharing between Google's own Wave server and whatever Wave server you have up and running.
The cool thing about it is that if you mark a piece of your "wave" (what we call a thread here on 4chan) as private between only users on your server, then those private pieces will never be shared with the other servers. This is much better than everyone pushing crap on one big server and hoping your secrets stay secret.
I know the wave.google.com front page video is long, so skip ahead to the section from 1:05:14 to 1:09:20. (I downloaded the vid from YouTube. I like it.) You'll see three Wave servers sharing info. Two are based on Google's code and the third one is a low-tech, stripped-down, text-only implementation. It looks good.

You need to calm down #6. Did you even watch the Google video on wave? I doubt it. If you did, maybe you'd be a tiny bit excited about it too.
I hate to burst your bubble, but not everyone here is a sock puppet or viral marketer. I'm #1 and I just happen to think this is awesome.
By the way, the best overviews and what not that I can find outside of the NDA world of the Google Devs would be on mashable dot com.

Since I first started this thread, I started to wonder: How do you separate your work life from your home life with Google Wave?
My worry is that you will never escape from work. If someone is burning the midnight oil or editing something twelve timezones away, you'll be bombarded with work during off time. That's not cool.
