Recommended mobo?

Hey there, I'm planning on building a new computer and plan to spend about $1800 at most (monitor included) and I can't decide on which mobo to buy.  I was told I'd want an Asus ATX that takes intel.  I'm hoping to get one off newegg but even the best ones have reviews that mention compatibility issues, so I ask you /tech/, which one is your recommended mobo?

Specific recommendations are meaningless without some idea of what the system will be doing. Gaming? CAD? EDA? Video editing? What OS do you plan to run? There's no single godly motherboard that is awesome at every possible task (except Konami Scramble boards, which can run anything).

Asus is overrated. They're good, but not considerably better overall than e.g. Gigabyte or MSI. Pretty much all boards have compatibility problems of some sort; it may not always be clear whether the board manufacturer or someone else is at fault, but even the best boards don't work with everything. Don't worry about it too much unless it's incompatible with something you actually plan to use, or incompatible with some very broad component type/confguration.
