Display issues

Alright, I've got a laptop with Vistaids and I'm trying to get it to output to an LCD TV. The connection is with a VGA cable.
The TV has a max res of 1920x1080 and supports that as a computer input resolution through VGA.
The laptop has a Mobile Intel  965 Express chipset. Every time I go right click> Personalization> Display settings I get a warning saying "Invalid Display Settings":
"The currently selected graphics display driver can not be used. It was written for a previous version of Windows, and is no longer compatible wit this version of Windows.

The system has been started using the default VGA driver. Please contact your hardware manufacturer to get an updated driver, or select one of the Microsoft provided drivers."

After that, I get a picture on my TV, but the resolution settings now goes to a value of -1 by -1 pixels. If I go to advanced settings and click on Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile and then Graphics properties, the display settings freezes up and though I can still use other functions, the Intel Media driver starts eating up 50% of the CPU power.
I've wrestled with it for a bit, and can get a picture on my TV, but any time I try to alter any Display setting on the driver, the driver freezes up and eats 50% of the CPU.

Anyone else experience this or know of any solutions?

No dice. It says the driver isn't the right one for my system and to go tot he manufacturer's website. I went there and downloaded that driver and installed it. It did not fix the problem.
Also, I took it back tot the store and hooked it up to one of their PC-input 1080 tvs and it worked absolutely fine. The display driver error message did not pop up and the CPU did not get 50% of its power eaten up.
After some tinkering, it looks like it only messes up on my TV, all other compatible TVs I tested (3 others) work fine, with no hang up at all.
I'd think my TV was defective if not for the fact that my previous laptop worked fine on it.
