So, My new college is absurdly gay. Theyve installed some cisco clean access shit that it makes us download to connect to the internet, only problem is that it blocks vent, any internet game; including xbox live; and any torrent. I can understand the torrent block but.. blocking wow and vent and crap is just gay. So.
How do I beat this?
Save me 4chan!

Apparently they don't block cross posting.

I had to deal with this my freshmen year a few years ago because I was in one of 2 dorms that first year that had resnet instead of roadrunner. I remember that fall until it was shutdown I was able to get files off a thing called i2hub was basically a direct connect agent that was specificly for connecting different college users that were running off of internet2 so the speeds were insane (i got a movie in like 10-15 minutes) For torrents for a long time I just couldn't do it but later into that spring, they first came out with the protocol encyption in utorrent and once I enabled that torrent's were working. Then again this was a few years ago so things may have changed. Also if you can find it, there may be a http website backdoor to your resnet that may let you log into it bypassing the Cisco Clean Access agent checks because alot of times if it says you need virus definition updates and you try to connect, it won't let you connect (which it is suposed to all the time).
Another problem I remember with this system was that it would log you off every like 12 hours or so you had to reload into it before hand when you weren't doing anything so you wouldn't be in a game and then poof loged out.
Really was a pretty shitty system.

Here again, I just remembered something as to how i was able to get the http login page. I used the firefox user agent switcher so that it thought I was running linux so when the site loads it doesnt check for CCA as CCA doesnt run on linux. Facebook has a few groups dedicated to this so you may get better help over there.

if you are connecting with a hard line into a jack and you haven't updated your shit, try that first.
If you have not tried using a wireless connection, it might be worth a shot. I used to have to deal with this crap and for some reason, when I bought a wireless card, I could get online again, and magically, I didn't even have to install that gay software.
I think the college should drop all the restrictions at the beginning of each semester, and watch as the fucking porn and music downloaders bring their network to a screeching halt. They should leave it that way for 1 month, then turn the restrictions back on, then send an email to each student saying "NOW WHAT'S YOUR FUCKING COMPLAINT ABOUT THE BLOCKING?!?!".
Naturally, they should have another network for staff to use during this time, since there's no need to bring the REAL network to a halt just because some immature fucking downloading fagmartins don't understand what bandwidth is!

heh as part of the policy for resnet we couldn't run wireless (the even ocasionally had people using equipment to scan for people breaking this rule and bust them) Now back when Mario Kart DS came out this pissed me off, but then I just got the Nintendo Wifi USB Connector and was able to connect to Nintendo Wifi connection without them knowing as their equipment probably wasn't programmed to recognize it as the device just came out at the time.

Ill hafta try the wireless trick. During Orientation they had us all sit in a big room with a projector and showed us how to log in at school. At the end of the presentation i asked the guy if I could connect a wireless router. He got really shifty and gave me an answer along the lines of "We dont want multiple people on the same port."
Im gonna hafta try that when i get back today

1) you can go out and buy a vpn router, set it up at your home, then use it to tunnel out. my school does the same thing, but i plan on beating them next semester with a vpn tunnel out. they supposedly blocked it, but my roommate (ligitamently, he does tech support) tunneled out all the time. you would need some help to set it up, but i'm 90% sure it can be done. might have pretty bad lag though, not sure how that would work.
2) just go talk to them about unblocking those ports. most of the time, they are semi rational people, and with a little coaxing can be convinced to unblock ports that are used exclusively for stuff like xbox live. they might need some coercing, but you can probably do it. either way, best of luck.
Think carefully before you raep college computers. In the UK people have been forced to leave their courses because they've "misused" resources.
This has financial implications - you'll have to pay for everything next time you go to college - and it has future job application implications - you'll have to explain that you got thrown out of a college because you wouldn't follow the rules.
If your home's not too far from your college you shouldn't have much of a latency issue. I'd be more worried about bandwidth usage more than anything.

I didn't realize how good I had it until I read about that guy who had to uninstall utorrent.
By the way, it may still be possible to change the user string if you add a little extra:
If there is the suspicion that a malicious user might try to
masquerade as non-Windows machines, e.g. Linux, in order to bypass
CCA Agent installation, the administrator can define Network Scanning
rules on the CCA Manager and use Nessus scans to determine the real
OS in use. This will catch users that are masquerading. For this, the
CCA administrator can either obtain the appropriate plug-ins from
Tenable or www.nessus.org - as an alternative, users can write and
integrate their own plugins.
