My friend's got a strange problem: he has a net connection he's sharing with another guy, and recently he just can't connect to the net (through a modem). The only computer that can is the other guy's (all the comps are laptops), they tried another laptop - nothing. When they connect it to the router, it doesn't even detect the signal. The modem only works with this one guy's laptop.
How's that possible?

It's not possible. They are doing it wrong.
``and recently'' this makes me think it used to work. So obviously something has changed that makes it not work. Yet somehow the other guys still works so this makes me think that the reason it doesn't work on your ``friend's'' computer is something to do with his connection to said router.
In short a possible diagnosis: YOUR DOG CHEWED THROUGH THE WIRE

They did try connecting another laptop, and a router (same cable). And I know it shouldn't be possible.

MAYBE THE LAPTOP DOESN'T WORK

Two defective laptops belonging to two different people, and a broken router? A bit suspicious.
