New RAM on an old computer

Hi.

I bought an old computer at a garage sale (must have been from 1999 or so, HP desktop) and tried to put some of my spare RAM in it.

But when I started it up I heard a loud crackling from inside and it doesn't even turn on anymore.

I tested it before this of course and it was working just fine.

Did the new RAM fuck it up? I'm thinking it did but I wanna be sure, at least get some insight on exactly what happened.

you prolly fucked up the ram if anything, did you take it out and try to start it up?

if you have then id just toss the thing, you pretty much fucked up hardcore
