So I've been reading up on tutorials on how to dual-boot your system with Vista and XP, and decided to give it a shot. My system came with Vista, so I created a new partition on the hard drive and ran my XP boot CD to install XP on the new partition. Only problem is that the partition I want to install it on isn't showing up, instead it only shows one partition under "c: partition 1(unknown)". How would I go about getting the new partition to show up?
When you used Vista to make the new partition, was it a FAT32 partition? I can only imagine that that's the sensible way to start, since you should be able to convert it to NTFS later.

unless he has a BADMBR.

FDISK motherfucker, do you use it?
My approach was suitably cautious, #6. I'm not leaving and you can neither make me nor contend my technical solutions. Somewhere out there, a flaming dick seeks your fuckmouth. Open wide and ANSWER THE CALL.

No, it's NTFS. How would converting it to FAT32 help? XP uses NTFS anyway.
#8, I proposed starting with FAT32 (not "converting" it -- you START with a NEW FAT32 partition) since you seemed to not even see the NTFS partition when you ran the installer. Can't see the partition? No problem .. therefore, use another partition type. Like I said, if the new partition is seen by the installer, then the OS installs, and you can always have the system convert itself to NTFS later.
Mature handling of IT work involves finding quick workarounds, however illogical they might seem. "Fix the absurdity later ... but adapt and get the job done NOW."
Apparently, the NTFS in Vista is a journaling filesystem with rollback and audit capability. The structures between both NTFSes are too different such that XP can't use a Vista NTFS partition by default. It's sad that Microshit chose to NOT make the Vista NTFS format a backwards-compatible one, like designing it so XP can use it freely without engaging the journaling part.

Hm, I guess that makes sense.
I'm not sure if making a new PAL32 partition would help, since the installer won't notice it even if I left it as unallocated space.
