upgrade causing problems...

I recently upgraded from an old AMD Athlon 1ghz processor system to a AMD 64bit 3200+ system with 2gig of DDR400 ram. Still using 32bit WinXP Pro until I can get something made for 64bit.

My problem- movies won't play in Media Player, and when I'm playing newer games like Oblivion, it'll lock up after a time and I get a Blue Screen of video memory error (string lost/stuck in memory). Any help will be rewarded in copious amounts of Internets. Video card is Nvidia GeForce 6200, btw.

u wont need a 64bit operating system unless u have over 3gb ram so dont sweat that just yet.

yea, all drivers and windows have been updated as much as I can

is it a new card or the same old one? you could have damaged it while transferring (it happens) or the slot on the new board?

whats your PSU btw? could be it's not getting enough power.

Are you sure the bluescreen isn't just what your machine shows you while it is working on drawing the next frame?

Srsly, check for a problem with your graphics card, or PSU.

PSU is a new 480watt unit. It seems all my other games run beautifully, so I don't think the vid card is damaged, and when it shows the blue screen it immediately reboots, so I don't think it's just waiting for the next frame...

480w should be plenty...

so only happening with oblivion then? all i can think is uninstall oblivion, reinstall, patch and cross fingers.

dont try running on full gfx with a 6200 either. i'm running a 7600gs with 2gb ram and still only pull 15-20fps on full gfx with oblivion. my old 9600ATI had no probs on low settings though.

Did you update your motherboard and videocard drivers ect?
But try running a few rounds of Memorytest 86+ to check your memory, it sounds like you might have a bad stick of memory. Or your video card could be bad, but bad memory is more likely to be the reason for BSOD.

And just so you know Nvidia cards do not run Oblivion very well,  the game runs much better on ATI cards. (Excluding the Nvidia 8800 series cards.)

Oblivion is the only game I'm having problems with so far, but I'm also having problems with Media player...I try to watch a video and suddenly my cpu is running at 100% and the whole system bogs down, even after the video is closed.

You say 480W but is it a GOOD PSU or a cheapass not-worth-the-box-around-it one?  I don't know how people have been not getting this memo, but there's a huge difference between a good PSU and a generic one...how much did it weigh when you picked it up?  If it was heavy like a planet, you're probably good, but if you paid less than $30-40, you may want to go for something better. 

Protip: If you're on a budget, TTGI gives you an excellent unit for a decently low price.)

As for your problem, that sounds like a driver issue to me.  Of course, I'm not all that familiar with how windows does things, so...

Sounds like the card may be faulty. I had a 8800GTS that recently died. For media player problem, make sure hardware acceleration is set to max
