PSU voltage

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-20 14:13

Lately, my PSU is very loud and I can't stand the damn thing anymore. I've read about connecting the fan cable to the 5v source instead of 12v, but I'm not entirely convinced about that... What does /tech/ thinks? Yay or nay?

A little under voltage never killed anyone

well here's what you do.  You take that 5v source and you shove it directly in your ass.  Then you go hang yourself because you realize that no one cares about you and that you're better off dead because then you won't drain the life from others like you have been for all these years you've been alive.

Let's see, you're probably 14 or 15. You had your hand held until you could reasonably well get around the interbutts and add RAM.
Now as gratitude for the help given you dumping on a reasonable questioner makes you feel what?

   Superior?

to what? You have all the markings of an ungrateful leech. just DIE reject.

Wow, all hail the person that thinks he's awesome because he's not 14 or 15.  It doesn't matter what you say because you're still a stupid fuck who should take his thumb and shove it up his ass.  Faggot.

why don't you try adding a variable resistor?
put that inbetween ur wires, and then you can control teh fan speed. Drill a hole in teh back of ur psu and stick the nob out through the hole, and then u got urself a handy mod that isn't risky!

Disregard that, my balls haven't dropped yet.

fox64;

That aside you have manners. This is currently in /n/ in the thread about a spanking ban:

"I deal with your kids every day. I hear them screaming at their parents on their cell phones because the $20 they gave them wasn't enough for what they wanted to do. I see them break things and not even realize they fucking broke other peoples' things.

I see the fruits of your line of thought every fucking day, and I and every other employee exposed to these vile little shitstains wishes nothing more than to kick them through a pane of fucking glass. Thank you, asshole, for contributing to the pollution of a generation of kids who grow up without any understanding of being decent humans, without any concept of consequence, and without a shred of fucking manners or any thought as to what they're doing."

I already knew "the vile little shitstains" inhabited /b/ but I discourage their spread when possible. It's no harder to be a gentleman.

As for overheating, I think it's safe if your computer isn't an overclocked heap of circuitry... however, I don't know if 5V is enough the fire up the fan. It's not the air resistance, the electricity need to overpower the motor's magnets - See: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/brushless-motor.htm

I once pealed the wires on an old one, and tried them on batteries. Took 7,5V to get the thing to spin. But try it, if it spins it spins. But if it's quiet you want, migth just be a better idea to purchase a new quiter PSU.

'sup with 3 and 5?

Thanks for your help. I'll try it out then.
I'm not overclocking or anything, I'm using this computer mainly for internets, but yeah, I guess purchasing a new PSU would be the smartest thing to do.

Sorry I'm late.
You can connect between +5 and +12 lines, negative wire to +5, positive to +12. Gives you (OMFG) 7 volts. This works on ATX PSUs, but I don't think it works in AT or older. Might be an idea if 5v isn't enough
