I recently got one for cheap from a friend. It works, but it's quite blurry. You can barely read small text, even from the TVs own menu. Is this normal for LCD rear-projector TVs? It's nowhere near as clear as our older tube TV.

Any rear-projected picture from a source that would look normal on a non-projected screen means the RPTV has problems. RPTVs are intended not to look blurry given the constant distance of the screen from the projector.
Probably convergence issues in the projection unit. You can try adjusting it yourself or hiring someone else to take a look. Good luck.
