This is incredibly awesome. They've combined a DVD layer and two HD DVD layers on a single disc, so it can be played in both an HD DVD player (in high definition) and in an ordinary DVD player or computer drive. This means they can manufacture HD DVDs that are backwards compatible for people who don't yet have an HDTV but want their movies to be high-def when they upgrade. What's more is it's still very cost-efficient (much more so than Blu-ray discs.)

Wicked.

.... err sorry to burst your bubble, but most movies come on Dual- layer DVDs as they are too big to fit on one layer.  This means that the triple layer disk will have to waste 2 layers on DVD format, and only have one layer for HD DVD - which means the HD version of the movie won't be able to go on the disc unless they drop the quality. Either that or they'll have to crop down the quality of the original DVD.  Fucking pointless in the end, espesially when they can just put 2 discs in the package - on DVD the other HD (for probably less money too).  Now if they'd just come up with a three-layer HD disc, that would have given it a much better chance against blu-ray.
