HDTV for /b/tards

My TV went snap/crackle/black.  Again.  Last time it was from a lighting strike and US$200.00 later it worked but there was residual color burn.  It's  10yrs old.  Time for a new one.  A simple question about HDTV:

Broadcast Reception.  How does an HDTV signal compare to VHF/UHF reception?

It's like comparing a Konoha ninja to a Akatsuki ninja.

The Akatsuki is completely screaming gay, while the Konoha ninja is a little less so.
