they played well defensively after the first half, and even after the first goal
The second goal was just outstanding, and they seemed to lose their nerves after that

USA only got to #5 in the world rankings by playing and beating shitty teams like Canada and Costa Rica etc. They've been beaten by England and Germany now easily, both teams are lower in the FIFA rankings than them. This is because of #1 Euro teams don't give a shit about friendlies. #2 Euro teams generally play teams that are better at football or have more established football tradition than the US's common opponents.
The crapness of the FIFA rankings system was proven when a (by their standards) cruddy German team mauled the US 4-1.
Just what happens when football is bigger in one area than another. All that EUFA/Concaf/etc crap works sometimes, but fucks up the rankings.

You cannot be serious. Australia will be out in the first round. For every Kewell & Bresciano there is a Ronadinho & Messi. Playesr like Kewell, Cahill, Viduka & Bresciano don't compare with the big boys in football.
The only plus Aus has going for it is Guus Hiddink and the fact that we are underdogs so other countries may not take us seriously and field a weaker team against us.

Maybe, but apparently you're forgetting that Italy made it to the finals of the world cup and euro in 94 and 2000 (and lost them at penalties and extra time respectively).
You're also forgetting that Italy won the U21 euro championship in 1992, 1994, 1996, 2000, 2004..

Did you see how rigged the game was in USA vs. Italy? I'm telling you, USA paid off of the refs, and even some of the members on Italy! The goalies look when they made an auto-goal was priceless! He was like, WTF.
