How is it possible that a gas giant can be tidally locked to it's parent star?

Because, even under the gas giant, there is a solid mass that exerts gravity.  And the gas (of the "gas giant" is more dependent on the gravity of the planet than the gravity of the planet's star and local forces and "storms."
