The smell is that of sulfides, in this case hydrogen sulfide. H2S is a deadly poison, although it is rare to encounter it free in nature.

Listen...I'm sick and tired of reading about the gleanings of half-wits that happen to notice a reaction just cause they caught it out of the corner of their eye or just because it happened to pop into their minds at the moment.
Smelly farts? That's a reaction! Not an evolutionary advantage! The evolutionary advantage isn't the reaction, it's the action! The digestion of various substances that can be integrated into the body. The greater the exposure or increased repetition to substances will increase the rate of integration and decrease the rate of expiation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the farts are not smelly as such. Your nose detects the farts and the brain associates the smell with unpleasantness. I would guess the advantage of this association is that you would not be inclined to consume faeces - decreasing the chance of infection by escherichia coli.
