Godel, Escher and Bach

Has anyone read this or have any thoughts on it?

The book appeals to me but at 800 pages I want to know what I'm getting myself into first.

its referenced in XKCD so it has to be good

i started reading it, pretty interesting shit but i ran out of time to read it. its really a book for maths people
