Godel, Escher and Bach

Has anyone read this or have any thoughts on it?

The book appeals to me but at 800 pages I want to know what I'm getting myself into first.

OP here, had a browse through it but decided not to read it.

I was interested mostly in the math stuff but the guy seems like too much of an amateur.

One for the pretentious liberal arts crowd, I think.
