Godel, Escher and Bach

Has anyone read this or have any thoughts on it?

The book appeals to me but at 800 pages I want to know what I'm getting myself into first.

I have read it. I am a programmer and this book has disgraced me and my art. I'd recommend it to a physicist/mathematician though.
