the sum 1-2+3-4+... is equal to

\sum_{n = 1}^{\infty} [n*(-1)^{n+1}]

which is the same as

\sum_{n = 1}^{\infty} [(2n-1) - (2n)]

(expand it to verify it's the same series) but this reduces to

\sum_{n = 1}^{infty} (-1)
