Evolution can't account for rats

Name: Anonymous 2008-10-15 2:29

Evolution says humans and rats have a common ancestor. Rats have had just as long to evolve as humans, but humans are more intelligent than rats. Why aren't rats getting smarter and smarter? Surely a smarter rat has a better chance of surviving.

The eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet.

Kronecker delta σij

Surely the kronecker delta, nominatively, would be represented by the greek letter delta, not sigma.

Rats of lots of babies at once. You can't have lots of babies at once. Therefore, rats > you.

See the logic here. Our niche is intellence. Rats beat us out at a lot of other things.

rats aren't getting smarted but humans are getting dumber.

Intelligence is evolutionarily expensive.  Due to increased cranial size, birth rates are substantially lower and a child has to be delivered earlier in order to fit through the birth canal at all.  It takes years for the brain to fully develop, and even then it takes longer to fill it with enough knowledge to be used to it's full potential.  Not to mention the fact that the human brain is one of the most energy hungry organs in the human body, which means either less energy available for other tasks, or a vastly more calorific diet.

Rats, on the other hand, average around ten children per litter, and can reach reproductive age after six weeks.  They're also ridiculously adaptable, and can live in almost any environment that has sufficient food.  Since evolution favors reproductive success, the advantage is obvious.

tl;dr Rats are happy in their niche, they don't want brains.
