Does 0.9999... = 1 really?

Hey I was talking to this gay guy and he was trying to convince me that 0.9999.... = 1. Is this true?

Yeah, recurring or not, it doesn't equal 1, rounding it will make it equal one. If logic like that was applied to bigger numbers then why even have the number 9 if just equaled 10? That is pretty much what OP's gay friend is saying.

0.9999999999999~ in no way equals 1, it just rounds to it, yes it is very close 1, but does not equal it.
