Majors

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-20 16:56

I will be going to a university next year. But I'm doubtful what concerns specialization in a specific subject, the only thing I'm currently certain about is that I will be joining the field of science.

Currently, my advance profile classes are these (I don't know how stuff works in the US, but we can only get specializations based on our AP classes, and getting into a university for me will not be hard because currently my grades are around the region of ~96-98%)

Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

I am currently highly interested in:
Biochemistry,
Bio engineering,
Mechanical Engineering,
Automation,
Molecular Biology.

Which one of these majors are the most interesting, or the most useful? Or would you prefer to choose something else yourself?

Don't do math.

The bio related fields are in high demand, and might one day cure cancer (that is killing /b/ or otherwise).

MechE doesn't pay well, from what I've heard.

I'm doing physics; it's interesting, but pays even crappier than MechE.

don't go to college

Waste of time

You can study my dick all night long baby

You'll change your mind once you get out of middle school.

Wasn't planning to.

>>3

Thanks for the tip.

>>4

Since this was mentioned already, I'd like to ask, whats the difference between an university and a college?

>>5

Ok. Cut your dick off and send it to me via email. My scalpel will accept it with pleasure.

A university often refers to a set of colleges or schools on a single campus (law, liberal arts, graduate studies etc), while a college is a single school (take your pick of the above).  However, there is no hard and fast distinction between the two words in the states, and they are used interchangably.

All science is either physics or stamp collecting.

and particle physics is stamp collecting.

Pretty naive.

Curing cancer, will lead to other major problems, which could be even worse.

Better look for something, that will change the human physiology or to eradicate the complete humanity.

For Nanotechnology, Physics?

But there won't be any biologyrealated themes and also not much engineering.

To much theory (which is necessary, cause until now there is not much of real nanotechnology except material-optimization.......)

Name: 4tran 2008-07-28 13:27

Other than overpopulation and pollution, what other major problems?

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-28 13:31

Go for Molecular Nanotechnology.

Be the one that make the break-through in these fields.

Be the one that make science-fiction into reality.

Do it!

Engineering pays better than the pure sciences.

MechE == Robots DO IT

It is all about money, money , money......you know, usual salaries won't make you rich.

And i doubt that the difference is so big, assuming you would be top notch in both fields.

You can also work in the industry as a scientist (especially as physicist, atleast in our country, because they are generalists and have learnt to think, so that they can adapt to any problems and given tasks quite fast).

That is a very good argument. I love robots.

Name: Anonymous 2008-07-31 1:34

know that non-engineering biology degrees (biochem, etc) are essentially useless unless you plan on getting a phd afterwards.

Or want to become a high school Biology teacher.

If you want robots:
Mechatronics Eng. > Mechanical Eng.

It depends on the exact courses program.

Ever heard of bio engineering?

With a master you can surerly work in a biotech-related concern.
And while working/exploring you can get the Phd.

>>21 what part of "non-engineering biology degree" did you not understand?

There's also Biophysics, lol. You might want to check this set of BME lectures from MIT if you're interested.

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=1AD80D1880B5BDB6

Pretty much you'll be trying to solve biological problems with an engineering approach. That's a hurr-durr out of the book definition isn't it? But seriously though, most of my classmates are in the program to become doctors or the like. Very few of them, I think, want to get in the industry of medical devices.

Just like many engineering majors, the road's tough. A good handful of my friends have already changed majors out of BME.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-01 5:55

>>25

Well there are also other kind of biotech-concerns.

But yeah, Phd is pretty standard among them.
I mean what do you want to do with knowledge already known?

But you can get the Phd while working for a concern.

If i would be one of the best, i would try get into military researches.
I think, they are the most-up-to-date.

And regarding MIT:

I think they have a project for the military called "Nano-soldiers" or something like that.

And it seems the progresses are not good , hehe or they won't spread any information.

I can remember that catchy slogan, a nano-suit that enables the soldier to jump few meters high, jump further, run faster and so on.

And all we have until today are those big unflexible unuseful exoskeletons.

I wonder....

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-01 7:42

Fuck engineering, take that shit to aut/o/ or something.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-02 12:02

I don't know if it was intended, but why the hell, the camera was only focusing on the prof?

I couldn't see anything relevant.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-02 16:11

I chose BME because I want to work on prosthetics research.  Although chances are good that I'm going to fail, I'm not known for giving up easily.

I would probably pick bio(medical)engineering because you can easily go onto med school if you want or even specialize in other biology/engineering related fields if you want to switch.  That's one of the huge draws for me when picking it over mechanical or electrical engineering, plus biology-related subjects are much easier to a person who isn't as mathematically inclined as myself.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-02 17:13

My head is smoking.

I can't decide whether engineering or science!

I mean, i wan to design things, create things using the knowledge.

But what is when the knowledge isn't yet avaible?

I want to make use of the knowledge, rather just knowing it...

This is so tricky.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-03 15:52

I will do 2 masters!

One in science and one in engineering.

Godlike!

Also for nanotechnology i would reccommend to study physics or chemistry.

Engineering can't do shit if the fundamentals aren't there or aren't understood good enough.

So physicists can function as an engineer too.

how do i get out
also dix!

PHYSICS!

Name: 4tran 2008-08-05 20:39

That's French, not physics.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-05 20:45

les physiques is French AND Physics

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-06 5:54

I think i am gonna pick up an engineering bachelor.

I want to create application based on the knowledge, i just don't want to know it.
