Human Shit Production - Total Daily Volume

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-31 1:00

Assume a conservative 1/100th cubic feet of human shit produced per capita daily:

.01 cubic feet * 6,602,224,200 (July 2007 pop. est.) = 66,022,242 cubic feet per day

METRIC- 66,022,242 cubic feet = 1,869,541,700 liters = 1,869,541.7 cubic meters (by comparison, an Olympic sized swimming pool only contains 2,500 cubic meters of water)

ENGLISH- 132,044,484 cubic feet = 2,445,268.22 cubic yards = 493,880,667 US gallons
(by comparison, daily world beer consumption is only 82,191,780.8 gallons per day -- "Beer." World Book Encyclopedia. Chicago: World Book, 2001.)

Here's a helpful way to imagine the total volume of 1,869,541.7 cubic meters.  imagine a tank thats:

1.87m (6feet 2inches) tall * 1000m wide * 1000m long

Hope this helps!

since we have a baseline depth of 1.87m of human shit per km/sq daily, we can use that to calculate it across a larger area.  The island of Manhattan in NYC is about 60 km/sq, so we can divide 1.87m by 60 to arrive at 3.1 cm.

So the total daily human volume of shit would cover Manhattan in 3.1 cm of shit.  It may not seem like much, but after 365 days it would be 11.3 m (37.32 feet) deep. And after just 10 years it would be 110.3 m (370 feet) deep.  So in just a few decades, you could completely bury the skyscrapers of NYC in human shit!

How can we make sure our shit is recycled in the most efficient way possible?  I could see methane plants working well from the shit industry, but there would still be industrial waste left over from the unusable portion of shit- in essence, the shit of shit.

What's wrong with just using it as a fertilizer?

Bad for the soil in the long run.

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-03 12:03

Why? It's an important part of the nitrogen cycle, and returns nutrients to the soil that farming depletes.

It's like over-using plant food. Eventually the plants secrete nutrients into the soil through osmosis.
