Engineering

Hey fellow /sci/ fags. What kind of engineer should I be? I'm leaning towards mechanical/energy systems. Nuclear sounds pretty cool. I've pretty much ruled out civil and chemical. Any thoughts?

Electrical.

Leave the engineering to the chinks and indians.

Be a biological engineer and come up with an organism that eats oil slicks.

Control theory is hot.  Its not engineering like "get a wrench" engineering, but a good area to be in and some neat stuff happening there.

I'm a satellite engineer, I've put up over 1000 TV satellites.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-17 15:43

I wanna be an engineer when I grow up. Not one of those guys who sit behind a desk doing nothing, Hell no. I want to drive a train.

The point I was trying to make is that people should strive to perform engineering that MATTERS.  Another MP3 player that holds 10% more songs than last year's model, is hardly a laudable goal.  Try to make things that matter.  Try to control pollution.  Try to retard aging and extend lifespans.  Try to heal injuries and stop diseases.  Etc.

lol retard

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-17 18:13

You're the only retard aging around here.
THe rest of us are staying young.

Fucktard.

>>14
Staying young?  What, but the power of positive thinking?  EVERYONE DIES.  The average lifespan in the USA is about 72 for men, and nobody gets over 115.  Delusional shitcrack!

I think people should become biomedical researchers and hurry the fuck up and get me my brain-computer direct interface. But I think biology is boring, so I hypocritically chose another field of study for myself.
Nuclear sounds pretty boring, too. What are you gonna do, run around screaming "Wooh! Atoms!"? That's not cool, that's silly.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-18 9:44

Yeah, we really need old people hanging around longer.  Draining our tax dollars after they're infirm and incompetent to handle any task more difficult than getting dressed in the morning.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-18 13:27

Yeah, BLACKCream. Old people are stupid.

Stupid and OLD.

Naturally, life extension would have to be concomitant with extended functionality.  If you all were less burglars of turds, and were more thinkers of good ideas, you've have seen that assumption right away.

OP here.

I'm not really interested in biology or genetics. Physics and mathematics are more my thing.

Interesting. Thanks for that.

Right. That's one of the things I find appealing about energy systems. Energy seems to be a much bigger problem nowadays. What with gas prices and the fear of global warming. I like the idea of making things more efficient.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-20 12:38

Maximum efficiency (in cars, etc) has already been achieved.  Just a matter of people willing to buy it.

The corporations won't build those things, so it doesn't matter who is willing to buy it.  It's just not for sale.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-21 15:11

"Maximum"? I don't think so. Even the most efficient engines only deliver what, 30% I think, of the energy stored in their fuel.

Name: sage 2008-04-22 1:01

Maximum efficiency != 100%. lrn2thermodynamics

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-23 1:22

Why rule out civil? I'm going back to college, and that was one of my top choices.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-23 11:09

>>24
Well ok. But my point was there's still always room for improvement.

People commonly never consider civil engineering since we're no longer a culture of real builders.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-25 11:41

Most of it just sounds really boring. There are some interesting projects out there but I think that most of civil engineering is just stupid everyday shit. Given that there are so many civil engineers, I think the odds of actually working on something interesting are small. I could be wrong about this. I guess most of engineering is like that to some extent and civil may not be any worse. That and contractors are all asshats so I'd rather stay away from the construction industry if I can.

Christianity is the worst religion for civilization, since redemption is dependent upon faith, rather than good works, and a lifetime of wickedness can be redeemed by a death-bed conversion.
