Female gametes (ovum) only contain the female X chromosone.
Male gametes (sperm cells) contain either the male and female chromosone (XY) or both female chromosones (XX).
Thus whether the offspring is male or female is decided during the creation of XY or XX chromosones in sperm cells.

During the creation of XY sperm cells no alterations are needed. During the creation of XX sperm cells the Y chromosone must be replaced by a replicated X chromosone. This is a mutation in the loosest definition of the word.

The term mutant is clinical not derogatory, every organism on the planet is a mutant since mutations are essential for evolution. Anyone who associates mutants with deformed monsters and takes it seriously is an idiot.
