If 10 squared equals 100, why doesn't 1 squared equal 10???

1 squared = 1
10 squared = 10
100 squared = 10,000
1000 squared = 1,000,000

Notice the pattern that develops.  As you add zeroes one by one to the members of the left, the number of zeroes on the right-side counterpart has twice as many zeroes.  Therefore, since 10 squared has two zeroes, and 1 has one less zero than 10, 1 squared will have two fewer zeroes than 10 squared.  Therefore, 1 squared will have no zeroes.
