Tesla coil

So I'm thinking of building myself a tesla coil. Any thoughts? I don't want to buy one off ebay, mainly because I want to learn through building it. What's a relatively good size to build for pretty good arcs? Portability would be nice too cool. Just something powerful enough to wave fluorescent lights around and watch them glow, for example.

There are some fairly good plans sitting around the net; google them and learn.

Larger dome = higher capacitance = bigger charge you can wop someone with.
However, for a small coil I don't see any reason why you couldn't link some nicely sealed HV capacitors parallel to the main dome for a bit of extra zap.

There was an interesting article, about the subject, a while back at hack-a-day

Do note that such devices most certainly don't work like in the movies or, C&C Red Alert..
